umask 0002 works in a shell but not with Nautilus

I have set umask 0002 in /etc/login.defs which gives me what I want when creating a folder in a shell: dwrxrwxr-x.

However, when I create a folder through the graphical Gnome/KDE Environment with either Nautilus or Konqueror I get: drwxr-xr-x

Can someone please shed light on this, please?

Thanks
