Ubunturned 16.04 with cinnamon desktop crashed into fallback mode after update. How do I -save my data--Do a freshuffle reinstall


I have been running Ubuntu 16.05 with cinnamon desktop for over a year with no problems. I updated without paying too much much attention and my systemum crashed into fallback mode.I now want to save my data and install mint 18.2 with cinnamon 3.4.4.how do I save my data when in fallback mode.
