Ubuntu8.0.4- Lost top line and bottom line on desktop-No app guide- No work spc boxes

Using Ubuntu 8.0.4 w/Gnome

I was cleaning out programs I don't use via Synaptic Package Manager. At some point I rebooted and now don't have any top line or bottom line on the desktop. I have to shut down by using the Terminal.

I don't have a clue as to what happened or how to get my panels back again.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Evidently you removed a package that creates those panels or you removed some software that, through removal, somehow reconfigured your desktop.

The first thing to try is to create a new user account and log on to it. If the panels are available for the new user then you simply have a configuration issue. If the panels are missing for the new user then you may have removed the package(s) that create the panels.

If you removed the required packages then you may be able to fix this by using Synaptic or Adept to reinstall the Gnome base system.
