Menu bars (on top and bottom of desktop) disappear in Ubuntu 7.10

After I upgraded to Gutsy do the menu bars on top and bottom of the desktop often suddenly disappear. Then there is only the desktop and the open programs left, and I can't use the computer this way, so I have to reset it.

Does anyone have any tips to a solution of this problem?
