ubuntu software installer looks like it does not fully load.

I recently installed ubuntu 20.04 and when I am looking for programs to install the software installer only partially installs. All of the squares have program names but a lot of them have no icons. Sometimes when I am looking for a program and am unsure of the name seeing the icon helps jog my memory.

Can't say really just yet.

I guess I'd be tempted to use command line sudo apt update to start and see what happens. maybe autoclean also.

I'm assuming the install is newish. Did it ever work correctly?

How fast is your internet.

I tried sudo apt update first thing with no results. I even tried "sudo apt upgrade" and got a message that there were upgrades and to install them use "apt list --upgrade" and a lot of software down loaded but nothing to do with my problem. 20.04 does not look as neat and polished as 18.04 I don't know if it is still being worked on or what. I have never had so many problems with all the other ubuntu versions I have used before.

The only time I had some issue with downloads like you have is when I was low on space. A new install needed a lot of things updates but the updates filled up drive.

I'd get the iso and test it md5 or shal. I'd believe the install was bad over such a blatant mistake.

I have plenty of space I think the person I got the dvd from gave me a bad one. Something else i noticed the "Remove Orphaned Software" application is gone. I am disappointed I thought the 20.04 would be better than 18.04. I was wondering what would happen when Microsoft got involved and ubuntu seems to have gone downhill. Also backups i made from 18.04 to a dvd can not be read by 20.04.

I was disappointed in Ubuntu 8 years ago and have not used it since.

Anyhow, from your superficial description (no technical/troubleshooting info at all) I'd say it's some sort of network/caching problem.

Things are looking up after a lot of searching I found a suggestion to try "sudo apt-get install gnome-software" I did it and it didn't solve everything but it helped a lot.
