Turning beep ON

Hi,

I am trying to experiment with the beep function of my computer. When I type beep at a terminal and hit enter, nothing happens. There is absolutely no sound.

I am running GRML 1.0 and using Fluxbox for a window manager.

Ideally I would like my computer to beep when I receive a message from a friend. I am using Bitlbee through IRSSI. I run IRSSI in a screen. My ~/.irssi/startup looks like this:
Code:
set bell_beeps on
set beep_msg_level MSGS NOTICES DCC DCCMSGS HILIGHT
Then in my ~/.screenrc I have this:
Code:
vbell off
for the last line in the file.

I want to have either a visual or audio alert occur when my chat window is unfocused and I receive a message.

Can anyone help me?

Hi.

Have you loaded the "beeper" module into the kernel? You can check this by issuing a command like this:
Code:
modprobe -l | grep -i pcspkr
If you get a result then this should be ok, else you should issue this command:
Code:
modprobe pcspkr
Hope this helps.
