trying to print from another computer running windows 7.
hey like the rest of you I am new and still learning about linux I do like 10.10. Anyways I have a laptop running linux and a computer running windows 7, I would like to be able to send print jobs from my laptop using linux and not have to be physically plugged in. I tried adding the printer through samba and it doesn't work.
the specs are as follows:
smb://Ganon/hp%20photosmart/c3100%20series
the message i got was idle unable to connect to cifs host will retry later.
linux gave me two drivers and i have tried both previously, the print job seems to get lost in space.
As printer is connected to windows;rightly click the printer icon and select sharing.
In Linux add the printer selecting NETWORK printer, enter the IP address of its location, and print a test page. Your distribution may a very a little in this routine, but it will be something similar.
You can also add the printer by opening a web browser or file manager and type in localhost:631 (as root). This will take you to a page where you can administer all your printing hardware, local and network.
hey there sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I am still having trouble with this issue, I can add the printer but the print Que says that either the printer isn't connected, or the job just doesn't get there. I didn't find the sharing in linux tab either unfortunately.
If the Windows computer employs user passwords (as it should for proper what-passes-for-security-on-Windows, CUPS must pass user/pword with the print job.
Running smbclient as root on your linux box will tell you how Samba is seeing the Vista printer.
I used to have a great link about how to configure the CUPS command to include the Windows user name and pword from a college professors university webpage, but he seems to have gotten a new job and his page is gone. However, this might help.
