Trying to install Gentoo Linux

Hello, I am very new to Linux and its various flavors. I downloaded the new Gentoo Linux and figured it to relatively easy to install. I supppose it is. Here is the crux.

I cannot get my network up and running, and I get huge errors on compiling the kernel.

My network card is netgear FA310, using a compaq presario with an AMD k6 400 Mz processor, 160 MB mem, 4mb shared video with the SIS 530 chipset.

Does anyone know how to over come the no network found error? And maybe some insight as to what I may be doing wrong on the compile?

Any assistance would be appreciated, Thankyou.
