How do you install Gentoo Linux?

heard that Gentoo Linux is a pretty cool disto so I had a quick look into its website and downloaded the appropriate iso files from the site.
after the quick look in the docs, especially the installation guide, i ran into a question... is it true that there ain't any GUI installation 'wizard' such as the installation of Redhat 9 or WinXP for Gentoo Linux? and then we need to create partitions manually and so on??

coz I booted up my machine using the 1st iso image and it ran straight into a command prompt..

Cheers,
F

hi

If you need a GUI to install linux, then you most likely would be better off using Mandrake or Redhat. These are easy distros to install and are great for newbies.

The whole point behind Gentoo is to provide total control over everything in the distribution. Yes, there are no gui install wizards. There are no gui configuration wizards, and there are a boat load of install steps and options. If this isn't what you are looking for then you probably don't want Gentoo.

If it is something you'd like to try then go ahead and give it a try. Don't be afraid it is difficult just because it is in text mode They explain all the command line programs in the install help. When you boot off the CD, change the root password, open up the website they tell you has the install docs (they even tell you how), and log in on the second virtual consol (CTRL+ALT+F2, CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch back) and follow the directions.
