I am new at linux. I have a problem that is driving me nuts.. Iam trying to get telnet server to run on my redhat 9 machine . I have tried everthing to get this working , I'll start off saying that when i type netstat -an --inet the ports are listening :22 and 23: and the foreign address is 0.0.0.0:*. The werid thing is i can telnet localy but no other machineon my network can, i have no firewall on here i type in iptables and says iptable needs to be upgraded, so i know its not a firewall issue. I also have done the following
made sure in /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
that disabled = no
I even added a line Only_from 0.0.0.0
check the host.deny in /etc/
checked the logs in /var
ran netstat - l and saw that telnet was listening
I have restarted xinetd serval times:
I am out of ideas i have read everything posble on the net that could help me.Is there a file to where telnet listens, cause like i said i can telnet localy on the machine Please help me
Makesure in.telnetd is installed on your machine. A lot of distros don't install the telnet-server package by default because it's a security risk. You should really not use telnet, but use SSH instead, as iot encrypts the traffic before sending it accross the network.
SSH really isn't particularly hard to set up. On just about every distro I'm familiar with it's configured from the get go. If you post your troubles, someone can probably help.
As for telnet, do you have anything in your /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny that might be blocking the connection? You can also check your system logs (/var/log/messages and /var/log/secure for RH9) to see if they shed any light on the matter.
