tarball problem


i downloaded a progeam and ran ./configure and make but when i ran make install it said that it could not create a folder because of permission denied what am i doing wroung.

thanks in advance for any help

It is trying to copy the files into you directory tree and you don't have permission. If you trust the supplier of the software run the install as root.

you have to su to root to run make install. It wants to write files to folders you can't wrote to as a normal user.

do i cd in to the root and then type make install

off the subject-- what book if any should i read to learn linux

well not quite, type

>su

that will prompt you for the root user passwd, you now have 'super user' power, you can read/write/delete anything on the system, be careful.

now you can type

>make install

and all should go well.

as for books I suggest browsing the forums, using http://www.google.com/linux, and I think O'Riley may have some good linux guides that cover commands, tricks. etc.... Also search google for linux tutorials and things of this nature.
