Talktalk

I'm having trouble setting up Evolution (Ubuntu Jaunty) or Thunderbird with Talktalk. I start the process but it falls down at the password & I know that the password is correct. Can anyone help and if so can they take me through from the beginning as I am a Linux learner? Thanks.

Have you checked the POP or IMAP settings (as well as the SMTP) settings against TalkTalk's instructions? Sometimes ISPs use odd port numbers. Also, they may only allow Outlook clients - check their pages.

If you provided a link to the details that TalkTalk provide for connecting to their mail sever someone may be able to give you some help, but you've not provided much to go on. E.g. You don't say whether you're using POP or IMAP or whether you're using SSL or not. Your problem (probably) doesn't have anything to do with Linux per-se so you may be able to find help elsewhere.
IIRC Thunderbird's set up wizard is unhelpful in that at no point does it give you the option to specify that the connection to the mail server should use SSL. If you need/want to use SSL then you have to go in to the preferences afterwards and select that. So if TalkTalk require SSL, it may be that that's causing you problems. Then again, maybe not.
