Suspend/Sleep Works in Windows 7 but Not in Linux

My PC will enter suspend fine but when resuming I get a black screen. The monitor LED turns green and the backlight is on (monitor is a Dell E196pf, VGA out), but the desktop does not re-appear.

Resume does work correctly in Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I have tried several Linux distros; Linux Mint 19.1 Xfce 64 bit, Linux Mint 18.1 Xfce 32 bit, Linux Lite 4.4 64 bit, and am currently using MX Linux 4.19.5 32 bit. Resume fails in a similar way in all of them.

Is there a way to solve this? Suspend is really handy and I don't want to go back to Windows 7 .

Since I've been coming here to help I've seen that this has been a common problem for a number of years now.
I haven't had this problem with my laptop and I'm not an expert at fixing this however; I did find a few links with good suggestions.

Another thing you could try is looking up your exact nvidia card and find out how to black list the nouveau driver and see if that helps any.

I have once solved this exact same problem on a laptop with nvidia graphics by installing the nvidia proprietary driver.

EDIT: And it even was running Linux Mint. I installed the driver through the built-in GUI for proprietary drivers.

Thank you both for responding.

Ztcoracat,

I tried to run the command to retrieve the suspend log but just got "command not found" (I copied and pasted it into Terminal from info in the first link). I got the same result when attempting the run the kernel tests.

I also installed Checkbox via Package Manager. It shows as installed but no icon appears in MX Tools. Although it comes up in a menu search, it won't actually run from the menu and I couldn't run it in Terminal, either. Blacklisting the Nvidia nouveau driver had no effect.

joe_2000,

MX Linux doesn't appear to have a GUI for Driver Manager, so I'm not sure how to install the nvidia proprietary driver in that distro. I may have to re-install Mint Xfce (which I prefer, anyway) in order to attempt that.

Did you check MX tools? I believe it is in there for the drivers.

Hi jkirchner,

Thanks but the only thing I see listed in MX Tools related to drivers is a command line setup link for the default Nvidia driver installer.

Have you run that to install nVidia drivers? I ran their tools when I had it installed on my Lenovo and all worked great.

Thanks, yes. It only installs the 390.116 driver which doesn't work - nothing else is offered. I have tried switching Nvidia drivers in other distros (mentioned in my first post) but none of them appear to work either.

A lot of commands have to be run as 'root' to get output.

I went to the nvidia site and looked, here's the driver:-

How old is your pc?

I appreciate the link but that driver is for a 64 bit system - I'm running a 32 bit version of MX Linux.

The commands I ran for the suspend log and kernel tests were preceded by "sudo", so I assume that would run them as root (?)

My PC is from 2006 and yes, I know it's old, but not too old to run Windows 7 .

If you would check this page you will see the nVidia 710 is in the "legacy driver" section. It appears that the 390.xx version you have is the "current" version. Have you tried asking on the MX forums? They are a very nice bunch and you may get better/faster answers from the source.

I was frustrated by not being able to resume from suspend to disk until this post that suggested using the nokaslr kernel option on 32bit architecture.

Thanks, that's probably a good idea. The reason I posted my problem here is because it doesn't seem to be distro specific and I was hoping that someone might have run into the same issue on a "generic" Linux install.

I appreciate the link but but I'm afraid that thread is just over my head. I question why I would have to do something like that on a new install, anyway. It seems to me that there has to be SOME Linux distro somewhere that would suspend correctly on my system without having to resort to things like kernel modifications .
