Hi, I've been playing on and off with Linux for a few months, and when a virus utterly destroyed Windows 2000, I decided to make the switch. I'm new to it and have only a basic understanding of the main commands of BASH.
I installed Suse Linux 9.1 without any problems on my Dell Inspiron 1100 but I'm unable to get online.
I configured Kinternet to dial up to my isp (Northnet.org, now merged with Westelcom) but the log tells me "NO DIALTONE. Connection failed"
My modem is a Conexant D480MDC v9.x and I know it works, because I also have windows XP (for a month, anyway) on the computer, and it dials up fine.
I noticed that when starting up Linux it lingers when initializing eth0 it tells me something like:

skipped
and I thought it might have something to do with it. Please, if anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
Check in Yast to see whether the modem is actually configured. If not, then you will probably have to download and install the driver for the modem. The package is named hsflinmodem.rpm - you can download it from the new york mirror at ftp://trane.caset.buffalo.edu/pub/su...0-182.i586.rpm
Well, if the modem is already configured, then you probably don't need the hsf package anyway. Are you sure that you've plugged the phone cable in correctly, and don't have any waiting messages on your answerphone (these can be mistaken as no dialtone) ?
Well, there's little more I can offer from here at the moment, given that I'm on a Debian system; other than suggesting that you check that you're a member of the dialout, dip and tty groups, and turning up the volume to check for the usual 'click' as the computer opens up the port to the phone line. Finally, I'd open up a shell and run (as root)

to see if the log here can give any clues as to why it's failing.
