Suddenly running slow

I'm currently running Red Hat 7.3 on dual boot with Win XP pro. Everything has been running well for a month, but today I rebooted and everything started loading extremely slowly. Once a program is loaded, it runs fine, but there is a problem when reading to and from my hard disk. I've run IBM's DFT on it, and everything is fine. What could possibly be my problem?

is it running slow under linux, or under linux and xp? assuming that you're referring to linux, have you recently upgraded the kernel?
