Sound won't work with Abit IS7-E.

I'm using the onboard sound, which I think is the intel AC97. The sound won't work at all in the GUI, and when it is shutting down it always prints [failed] next to dev/mixer. I am a complete newbie. Please help me. I want to listen to music while programming. It's the only thing stopping me from using linux as my #1 OS. Assume I have no knowledge of linux except how to open up a terminal and type on a keyboard.

you might want to start xmms or something from terminal and tell us what the error is. I had mine always tell me my /dev/dsp was in use. So i had to kill some programs to get it out of use.
