Software Installations (file structure)

pls help!!!

i've been running fc2 on computer 4 about 6 months. i've install software using rpm's and tarballz. my questions, however r is there a standard of installing the software, where in the file structure does one download to, and if one is compiling from where does on do it? i.e. do u download to /usr or to /home. when u ./make do u do it from a specific directory????

could someone pls help?? and give a step by step of the "right" way to do it?

regards

edz

As far as the source downloads, you can download it where you have access. I have a subdirectory in my home directory called 'downloads'. This makes it easy to backup downloads in case I need them again. Some people download to /var/tmp.

The 'make install' phase as root will install the application files where they need to go, usually under either /usr or /usr/local.
