destination dir for software installations
No lie: I have searched many times for the answer to this question, but it eludes me. I need to know how to determine the proper directory in which to install software.
I am running SuSE 9.1 with KDE 3.2. When I install packages using YaST, it's a no brainer. Installing from source requires a brain.
So I download the tar.gz file to /usr/local/src/. But at some point after that, when I've actually got an install script running, I am prompted for a destination directory. Should I select:
/usr/bin/ or
/usr/sbin/ or
/usr/local/bin or
/usr/local/sbin/ or
/opt/
something else altogether?
I see that software ends up in the above directories when installed via YaST, but I don't understand the basis for selecting one destination over another.
Many thanks.
