Slax 6.1 - "Boot Error"

Hello Community,

I have been using linux on and off for several years and tried various distributions however I still consider myself to be on the newbie side.

Anyways to the actual problem. I have downloaded and successfully installed Slax 6.1 onto my Sandisk Cruzer usb drive. I made it bootable and it successfully boots into Slax from various computers and laptops I have tried it on. However some bizzare twist of fate made it impossible to boot it from my home computer.

My home computer is a Packard Bell Imedia 2770 (about 2.5 years old) and supports booting from usb devices. The device works normally when I plug it in and I have no trouble using it otherwise. However when I set bios to boot from my USB device it gives me

Boot error

Initially I thought this might be a fault with the mbr of my USB drive as other threads suggest but what is curious is that I can boot on virtually any other PC I have tried to boot it.

I tried updating the BIOS but still no luck, any ideas suggestions or workarounds?

Thanks in advance for the help!

P.S.: Just wanted to add that my PC gave me the same error on every USB installation I tried, not only the SLAX distro.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

How do you have the USB setup within your BIOS? What is the boot order? Sometimes the latency of the device can be a problem for booting with a USB device.

Thanks for the reply Onebuck,

Due to a problem with my keyboard I can not access the BIOS itself but I can only access a separate boot menu when starting up my PC. This looks like

Press F2 to enter Bios press F8 to change boot order. The boot order menu looks like this :

USB DEVICES:
- USB KEY
OPTICAL MEDIA:
- DVD/CD ROM DRIVE
HARD DRIVES:

And I manually select to boot from the USB key from this menu. Hope this helps.

On the other PC's I have successfully booted my Linux the USB is set as the first boot priority.

Hi,

You really need to get into the BIOS to check the setup for the USB.

Thanks once again, I did access the bios finally and for some reason it listed my USB drive under hard drives, anyway I gave it boot priority and it now works like a charm!!!

Many thanks for the help!
