Simple question about FPS and glxgears

Hi.

When I run X with "vesa" generic driver, I get about 500FPS in glxgears (not so bad) but when watching a movie, it drops many frames (not good).

Now, when running X with "fglrx" ATI driver, I get about 90FPS in glxgears, but movies display smoothly.

Any idea why is happening this?

Thank you.

I'm guessing that your ATI driver is syncing to to the vertical refresh, which is at 90Hz on your display. FPS is a meaningless measurement.

Than you for your answer.

So, what is the best way to test if your Graphic Device is working as it should?

If you can play a 3D game with acceptable response, like Alien Arena 2006, ppracer, GL-117, Neverball, Torcs, Prboom/FreeDoom, etc. - then your video is running accelerated 3D.
