low fps in glxgears

I get like 10-15 FPS in glxgears. I'm running sarge. With nVidia drivers and linux kernel 2.6. Anyone know why? I have a GF 6600GT btw.

Did you modify your xorg.conf after driver install?
Also read /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README

did you use the drivers in the kernel or the nvidia driver?

have you tried any other programs? You have direct rendering so I would think it would work. I do know that glxgears can give bad info at times. Have you restarted the computer to make sure all the correct modules are loaded? Perhaps you have a kernel module in there that is conflicting.

also from the nvidia site

- If X starts, but OpenGL causes problems, you most likely have a
problem with other libraries in the way, or there are stale symlinks.
See Appendix C for details. Sometimes, all it takes is to rerun
'ldconfig'.
- You should also check that the correct extensions are present;
'xdpyinfo' should show the "GLX", "NV-GLX" and "NVIDIA-GLX" extensions
present. If these three extensions are not present, then there is most
likely a problem with the glx module getting loaded or it is unable
to implicitly load GLcore.

How are you running glxgears? Glxgears window size, running in background/foreground, desktop resolution, other apps running all affect the outcome. Also, glxgears' prime task is to check that OpenGL is working, it's not really meant to be used as a benchmarking tool

Sorry I didn't reply right away. But the problem is fixed, I restarted like mAineAC said and it seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the help.
