Should I upgrade my smbfs?

No matter what I try, I can't get an fmask and dmask of 777 to work on my hard drive-install of Knoppix. Shares will mount but not with full permissions on all directories. Should I upgrade my smbfs package? Is that safe? I see one listed when I apt-cache search.
