Just a point - when you insert the DVD and it doesn't apparently work,

how do you eject the DVD?

well that was interesting.

I put a cd in expecting it to play and it did 4 times out of eight.
so maybe it is the dvd player itself! I will put a new one in and let you know if that is the problem.
Thanks for the help.

I have had drives do that before, especially on laptops...
