VLC will play DVD, but won't play ISO

I have a curious problem that, though I have searched much, have been unable to find a satisfactory answer for. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop, and back up my personally owned DVDs to an .iso file using Brasero or K3b. Then I use VLC (I love VLC) to directly play the .iso files. For 90% of the DVDs it works fine. For the next 5% of DVDs, Brasero or K3b won't read them, which I attribute to encryption. For the last 5%, Brasero and K3b will read the DVDs fine, and VLC will play the DVD directly without a problem.

However, here's the rub. For the last 5%, VLC will play the physical DVD fine, but refuses to play the .iso of the very same DVD. One would think that if VLC could decrypt whatever decryption is on the physical DVD in order to play it, VLC could also decrypt that same decryption off the .iso when attempting to play the .iso. VLC produces the same results when playing from the mounted .iso image.

90% = Brasero copies .iso successfully, VLC plays .iso successfully

5% = Brasero won't copy .iso at all

5% = Braser copies successfully, VLC won't play .iso successfully (even though VLC will play the physical DVD without problem)

I don't understand why VLC will play the physical DVD, but not the .iso of that very same DVD, even though the copy appeared successful.

Any ideas as to why this is? Maybe somebody could point me to a page where DVD encryption is explained, as I'm just missing something here.

How do you know that you made a good .iso then? Will something else other than VLC play the .iso? Like mplayer?
You may try mounting the .iso loopback, or use file-roller to extract one of the the .vob files from the .iso and play the .vob

You don't say what errors you get when VLC does not play the .iso.
Launch VLC from shell or term, try to play the .iso and see what errors you are getting.

You may also try using something like mencoder or transcoder to turn the movie into an .avi or .mkv file.

Start with the errors that VLC gives when trying to play the .iso

Good point, sorry for the omission.

VLC will play the DVD menu, as well as the previews and special features, but when the main feature comes on, the video window completely disappears and VLC stops playing. The complete output from the CL is:

When attempting to play "VIDEO_TS/VTS_09_1.VOB" directly, VLC hangs on a black screen, and here is the CL output:

Code:

Looks like the problem may be that libdvdread couldn't read the DVD in the first place:

Code:
~ $ lsdvd
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1202 ***
*** for vts_ptt_srpt->title[i].ptt[j].pgn != 0 ***

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1913 ***
*** for pgci_ut->nr_of_lus < 100 ***

~ $
If this is the case, I wonder why Brasero and/or K3b don't error out when reading the DVD to create the image?

I just noticed the exact same thing. I am having the same problem as you. Have you ever found a solution to the issue?

Sadly, I have not found a solution, I just ignore the DVDs that give me this problem. Fortunately it is only about 5% of the ones that I have dealt with. The issue still bothers me a bit though.

not a vlc problem

I'm a little late for that, sorry, but I believe I have an answer.

I had a similar problem, so I checked a few things and the problem seems to be in the iso made by k3b, if you rip the dvd using k9copy for instance, the resulting iso will be fine. Here is what I tried :

- original DVD : plays fine in vlc
- iso from said dvd made with k3b : extras and menu fine in vlc, main feature causes vlc to close ; similar behaviour with mplayer except mplayer returns an error "could not read from source" when attempting to read main feature
- iso from said dvd made with k9copy : plays fine in vlc

My guess : there is an (extra ?) encryption to protect the main feature, and k3b does not crack that when making the iso file, thus resulting in a useless iso. I suppose brasero would lead to the same result. However, k9copy uses libdvdcss when making an iso, thus making a usable iso file since it's essentially completely decrypted. I'm ready to bet AcidRip, dvd:rip and omgrip would do the same.

I'm moving 6000km away in a few weeks, want to take my movie collection with me but in a compact way, so I am going to leave all dvds, boxes and jackets with my parents and rip all my dvd in iso format. Since I don't want to take any chance, I'll use k9copy for that. I suggest you do the same in the future. Extra bonus : by default k9copy shrinks the dvd to burnable dvd size (4.3 Gb) so when I reach destination, I can burn my dvd back and free disk space. And k9copy works fine under gnome as well, despite being from KDE.

Note : since I'm rather anal about copyright stuff, I have religiously kept all receipt from all the dvds I ever bought, so I am going to scan them all, take pictures of my dvd collection, and keep it all in my computer, so I can prove I do own and did pay for all the original dvd for all the movies I'm taking with me. I hope I'll be fine if ever customs enquire...

Note 2 : I'm never ever going to buy blurays again (if I can help it) !!! No choice but to take them along and the little buggers weight a ton.

Anyone who has tried to get dvd's to rip know that there are some newer encryption schemes on some of them. Some of the commercial rip software gets past that and blu-ray disks.

Kind of an old thread.

I have found that using DVDFab [http://www.dvdfab.com/] I can rip even very modern DVDs that have newer customer-abuse-methods (*cough* err, I mean DRM protection *cough*). I haven't tried any BluRays yet but it claims to fully support them as well.

This program works just fine under Wine. You can get around their trial restrictions if you think about it, but I'm not suggesting that tactic.

Old song or not; the issue certainly hasn't been solved as far as I can tell from two days search.
I have exactly the same issue as described by airman99 and valyerra.
k9copy has been a preference for me for years due to it's ability to shrink the original to dvd burn size.
unfortunately with some newer dvd's it will no longer burn a copy or create an ISO that VLC is capable of reading completely.

wine is not my favorite thing to use and so I try to avoid it if possible.
I have tried various programs such as acidrip and brasero to create an ISO for VLC to play but without success.
my latest attempt is to extract the ISO to .avi files and then burn them using devede, also a capable program overall.

I will report back if that works.

...by the way, if I were to use wine I would then prefer to resort to AnyDVD from slysoft. I wish they would write a Linux version...
