samba printing problem

Hi folks,

this one is just annoying me. Samba shares working just fine accross the network. Thats 2 linux jaunty boxes, 1 xp pro, and 1 win7.

Win7 and tux2 print fine through samba, tux, works as tghe printer is connected directly to it!

But XP, just ejects a bit of paper through it Its a HP j2200 using hp drivers on the windows boxes.

Any ideas?

Why are you using HP drivers on your XP machine? I think, that you must use CUPS drivers.

I am using it as windows share printer. Albit at the linux end under cups!

To answer.

1) It's worked before

2) It's working using the hp drivers on the win7 lappy.

If it has used before then it should work now as well. I am using similar configuration like you do, but I use CUPS drivers at windows client. You may probably try this as a workaround.

But I assume, that you would like to get it working with the HP drivers. You may have a look at samba logs in /var/log/samba. You will probably find something interesting.

Ah, I have a similar problem!!! I have been using Samba for more than 5 years. All of the sudden, a couple of months ago, it didn't work for printing. File sharing still works.

Intuitively, one of those Microsoft updates may have affected things.

I've double checked my configuration files, both on the linux samba server, and on all the XP clients. The fact that ALL of the XP clients don't work now, and ALL of them worked without problems for a long long time, has me confused.

One thing I have found, which is different, is that the only way I get get printing to now work from the XP clients, is to attach them through http.

like: http://192.168.1.5:631/printers/MainPrinter

Where 192.168.1.5 is the printerhost, 631 is cups port, and MainPrinter is the print queue. That works, but treating the printer as a shared network device has somehow stopped working.

JUST TO CLARIFY: The URL entry appears to route printing to CUPS, whereas the smb or samba routing of \\sambahost\printer appears to use samba, and then route to CUPS.

The question remains: Why does samba not work, all of the sudden?

For me the problem lied in cups.

Change the printer property from*"authenticated" to "default".

Manually, it's in /etc/cups/printers.conf

sudo diff /etc/cups/printers.conf /etc/cups/printers.conf.O
