Arrow Running X on a laptop

i have a compaq presario 12xl300, and i installed Redhat 7 on it fine, but i cant get X to work with the display, its has a Trident Cyberblade, but no matter what settings i do for the vertical and horizontal refresh rates, it'll start X, but the left 2/3 of the screen is turned off, but the other third on the right is visible. except, when the test is done or anything, it goes back to text mode, and the screen is still turned off on 2/3 of it.
i've tried installing Redhat 6.2, SuSE 7.1, and the last distro of Mandrake, and none of them work.. i'm about to give up on it.
