Try to reboot directly into runlevel 3 -- edit your /etc/inittab, and look for a line that says:
id:5:initdefault:
and change it to:
id:3:initdefault:
and then reboot. When you rebooy, X will not start and you can do what you need to do from runlevel 3. Change the line back to as it was before to make the system boot to runlevel 5 again (you can start X from runlevel 3 by typing 'startx').
i already knew that, but it is just a workaround, not a solution. i believe that i have heard about ppl with geforce gfx cards that has had this problem before, and am hoping for a more permanent solution. thanks anyway
