root password


im sure youve all heard this before but when i try to install something with Kpackage (knoppix) it asks me for a root password.

what should i do?

Give the root password, of course.

You have to be root (or have special permision) to install software in most cases

are you using a knoppix boot CD? Or did you install to the HD? I don't know about installing to the HD, but w/ a CD there is no root password, just hit enter.

do you have the CD? if so do the following in a command line, I use the boot parameter linux26 2(this will give you the 2.6 kernel, and runlevel 2)

mkdir /newroot

mount /dev/(root) /newroot

chroot /newroot /bin/bash

this will give you a root prompt

this will allow you to change the root password.

Reboot
