With Linux you are allowed to have 4 partitions. Within that limitation you can have 3 primary and 1 extended primary partition. Within the extended primary you can create multiple logical partitions within the allocated space for the extended primary partition. Or you could have 1 to 4 primary partitions that are stored in the partition table.

Your original partition scheme used the allowed partitions of four for the partition table.
