Unhappy Redhat7.3/PHP/MySql

I installed RH7.3 with Apache 1.3.23-11 and php 4.1.2-7. I then downloaded, compiled and installed MySQL 4.0.15.

I can connent to MySQL and create and edit databases just fine. I can also use PHP scripting in webpages and my webserver parses the PHP just fine. It is only when I try to connect to a MySQL database through PHP that I get:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect()

I have also tried to install php-mysql-4.1.2-7 but get the following failed dependencies:

mysql is needed by php-mysql-4.1.2-7 is needed by php-mysql-4.1.2-7

I don't understand this, since MySQL is installed and functioning properly.

I am very new to Linux so please excuse me if this is a stupid question.

Try finding a package mysql-client or something similar on the install CD's. You can have the server installed and working fine, but a lot of the client side libraries won't be installed.
