quick q about kernel recompile

well, it all started when i wanted to get my ATI fglrx drivers installed.... many people seem to support the idea that recompiling the kernel with **** helps out getting the drivers working.

But, the question:

I have downloaded the src (2.4.26) that i want and did a make xconfig. That seemed okay. i saved that configuation as 2.4.26-newer or something like that . before that I moved my old "/usr/src/linux-2.4.26" to "linux-2.4.26-old" first.

now, i run make dep and it doesnt take long (<1 sec) and there is some errors and i know errors are bad at this stage.... I am looking for some help as to what this means:

================

root@darkstar:/usr/src/linux-2.4.26# make dep
gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -o scripts/mkdep scripts/mkdep.c
In file included from /usr/include/bits/posix1_lim.h:126,
from /usr/include/limits.h:144,
from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.4/include/limits.h:122,
from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.4/include/syslimits.h:7,
from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.4/include/limits.h:11,
from scripts/mkdep.c:35:
/usr/include/bits/local_lim.h:36:26: linux/limits.h: No such file or directory
scripts/mkdep.c: In function `add_path':
scripts/mkdep.c:221: error: `PATH_MAX' undeclared (first use in this function)
scripts/mkdep.c:221: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
scripts/mkdep.c:221: error: for each function it appears in.)
scripts/mkdep.c:221: warning: unused variable `resolved_path'
make: *** [scripts/mkdep] Error 1
root@darkstar:/usr/src/linux-2.4.26#

=================

thanks for any help. oh, and if it helps: i am running slack 10 w/ kde

Did you save your configuration without choose another name? You need to have a file named ".config" at the end of the configuration. If you do not have this file copy your saved configuration as .config and try make dep again.
