qmail + courier imap + squirrelmail...can't login using squirremail..user invalid

Hi,

Please help....I have setup a qmail server with courier imap,squirremail,vpopmail..etc..I followed qmailrocksorg to do the same.

Distribution is Fedora Core 2

When I login using squirremail ...it says invalid user or invalid password.

I am using system accounts to login..Did try with user and user@domain name in the username field of squirremail.
qmail + courier imap + squirrelmail...can't login using squirremail..user invalid

When I tried loggin into the imap server using : telnet localhost 143

I am able to login and the user is authenticated too.

Why isnt squirremail allowing me to login into IMAP....

Thanks in advance.

You have to add the user accounts into vpopmail, by default it will only have a postmaster@domain account. If you used qmailrocks then u installed qmailadmin. Go to http://yourdomain_or_ip/cgi-bin/qmailadmin and log in as postmaster for the domain you want to edit add the email accounts, vpopmail doesnt use system accounts by default, it's virtual. If the domain does not exist in qmailadmin then u have to add it...go to http://yourdomain_or_ip/cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi log in as username admin and your password that u specified and add the domain. Then add the user accounts in qmail admin. Hopefully this will get ya going. Please post to tell how it goes, I'll check back...btw I run the same setup.....QMAIL ROCKS!!!

thx for the info...linux terror

hi,

I already have a domain edith.com which has been configured in the apache server conf file with a ip of 10.77.27.99
The corresponding entry is added in the /etc/hosts file too. For squirremail and qmail admin, I am using a virtual domain (mail.edith.com) which is added in the apache conf file and also in the /etc/hosts file. Even mail.edith.com points to 10.77.27.99 as I have only one ip for both the web and mail server. Have I set it right?????

I will try the adding of domain in qmail admin and post the outcome. Thx for the reply.

Linux terror: u said u have the same setup running...did u tweak something or did u follow the steps in qmailrocks. I understand that there are some steps missing in qmail rocks. I am confused about creating maildirs for users. I have a user test..how do i create a maildir for the user test?????Is there any site or information on the working of a mail server and its connections to imap,pop3,smtp...etc...Should I use pop3 or Imap for my qmail server? Advice please.....

Cheers,
RnJ

I followed qmailrocks exactly.

The site really isnt missing steps....

I dont enter my virtual domains in /etc/hosts, I let dns and apache take care of that.

As far as maildirs, which is the format i am using, they will be created in /home/vpopmail/domains/domainname/user/Maildir , you have to remember that everything is virtual now, so the Maildir will not be in the users home directory.

as far as setting up maildir all you have to do is put ./Maildir as the only line in /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery.

When logging into squirrelmail with this setup a common mistake is that people don't realize that you have to login as 'user@domain.com' not just as 'user'

I'm guessing that if you followed the guide that apache is set up correctly for virtualhosting.

If you are stumped contact me or post again, I can be contacted at turah@linuxtorrents.org and i'd be glad to take a look.

Hope this helps,

thx linux_terror

hi

thx for the reply. I did try earlier with login with user@domain.com. The maildir were set as recommended. Thought it was due to squirrelmail sending the password in clear text as imap was configured for secure trans. Did install secure password squirrelmail plugin to send password in encrypted form.Still didnt work.

I am now using postfix with dovecot imap server. Would be appreciated if you could give some tips on these. As to how to enable smtpauth on dovecot. how to enable imaps and smtps with postfix? How to turn off the smtp,pop3 and imap ports? Postfix,Dovecot and squirrelmail were installed by default when installing fedora core 2. How to make squirrelmail work with dovecot and postfix??

I know its a lot of questions here...A little help on any one these would be nice.
thx in advance.

It's most likely something to do with the courier module you are using to authenticate with and your courier config file. I had these issues using the vpopmail auth module that comes with courier. I don't recall exactly what I did to fix it though, but it was a simple configuration issue on the courier side. There is a test utility that comes with the courier-imap source that you can use to check the authentication with from a command line. Dig around in the courier source tree and try to auth using it from a command line.

The tool I'm referring to is named authtest and is located in the authlib/ directory within the source tree.
