Unhappy LDAP courier IMAP SquirrelMail Exim

Hello all,

I'm an experienced Linux user who has recently purchased my own interweb connected box, I just would appreciate some guidance and pointers on my setup. I've searched all over and nothing definitive works.

I have a system which hosts multiple domains. These will be stored under something like /home/ domain with sub directories for httpconf, httpdocs, Maildir etc.

I would like a setup that allows me to have multiple users with the same name on multiple domains (so none of this is the same as malarkey). I just need a pointer on how to do the mail setup.

I currently have Exim, squirrelmail, courier-imap, openldap and cyrus-sasl installed. I have managed to get openldap working lovely, but i'm stumbling at courier-imap.

I have installed the squirrel vhost plugin, and followed the courier docs to setup authldaprc. I have also ensured that the "mail" attribute of the test user on ldap is specified and the password-hash in ldap is set to {CLEARTEXT} (although after a query it doesn't look right). This all works if I do the ldapsearch by hand for user with mail=adam @ Courier, however, seems to be in denial about such a user/password existing. I've even created a special courier user it is using for the search adn that i've verified works by hand.

I'm using LDAP as I eventually want to create my own box(en) admin system with custom attributes and services, yadder yadder etc. Could someone please tell me if they have courier-imap/LDAP working and provide an example config?

Also I'm using Exim and this works to send email from root (checked headers in received email on another email provider). Not sure if spamassassin is working as i cant check new mail with my imap working! (well prolly can i'm just lame). Anyone know how to scan outgoing mail with spamc in Exim?

Could someone please tell me the easiest way to configure exim to whack email in /home/ domains/ {domain} /Maildir/ {local-part}/ ? Think I have this set correctly but aren't sure. Also could someone please tell me how to get courier to look here as i cant find a single reference as to where courier loads IMAP mail from for a user. (I hear whispers you can pull this out of an LDAP attribute?).

Also could someone please provide me with a working sasl-regexp rule for <user> I would appreciate guidance on storing passwords as MD5 digests and whether this works between SASL/LDAP and other server software.

If someone can think of a more apt IMAP server (except building my own in Java!) I'm listening! I'd like to use Maildir too. Also, if someone could post me a link to a good LDAP-as-main-system-auth-howto that'd be great.

Thanks for the info, and sorry for the rambling post, I'm just very much confused. ;o(

Think I'll have to write a MotherOfAllHowTos after this.
