Puppy Linux reverts to prompt console

I installed Puppy Linux alongside Windows ME like three days ago. After two days, though, when I turned it on, it suddenly displayed the # prompt thingie. I formatted the Linux partition with the Live CD and reinstalled it, but this time it only lasted one day before turning to the prompt. GRUB is the boot manager. Did I do something wrong? It won't let me log in as root, either. It just says "invalid login". I didn't put any passwords on it.

What happens when you issue the 'startx' command from the cli? Do you get your 'X' back?
