my new hcl laptop's configuration is intel core dual T2310 processor,1GB ram. i couldn't run live knoppix 5.1.1 or ubuntu 7.1. which linux would it support ?

Did you look at the boot options for Knoppix? They are F2 & F3. You can choose the laptop option parameters.
