v4l
v4l is the video4linux module that provides the interface to capture devices such as tv tuner cards - if you don't have one I don't see why you should load it

Resolution probs
I had problems with Nvidia drivers where the system no longer allowed me to run in 1024x768. I had to enable the IgnoreEDID option for the nividia card (see nvidias driver guides).

drivers for geforce 2 cards
I would:
a) Highly recommend you download as use the nvidia drivers for xfree
b) Highly recommend you do not use the 1.0-1251 drivers but rather use the .9-769 .tar.gz drivers. (not available on nvidias site but can be found... I will reply again with a link if you can't find it yourself...
