Problem playing mpg files

I have just mounted my ntfs, but i cannot play mpg files using either Helix player or Totem player. Why is this? Are there any player that can play mpg files or am I missing any codec to play .avi or .mpg files? If so, where to download the codec? I'm using Fedora Core 5
