Angry Problem connecting to the Internet(Mndrk 7.1)

Hello everyone,

I have just fallen in love with Linux-Mandrake 7.1! It was bundled together with my PC with Win98SE, it has since crashed and I switching over to Mandrake 7.1. but the shop I bought from has since wound up its business and I have no one to consult.

Now I am having problem connecting to the internet.
The ISP(jaring.my) has given the instruction at the command level. Can someone help me at the KDE level(more user friendly)?

This is what I get when I try to connect to the Internet.

"Setting speaker volume...." Then at the 'Login Script Debug Window' it reads ATM1L4, ERROR ATZ OK ...and on and on.

I simply cannot logon to the Internet!!!!

Please advise. Thank you.

You have to determine how you should connect to your ISP servers, either ISP uses PAP or script-based authantication? These questions should be asked first, contact your ISP, if they mentioned the console way around it, then you should use it.
BTW what are these instructions you were given?

Wink

Thank you NEO 77777,

I shall check on it immediately when I go home from office.
As for the instructions, they are very long, at least 7 pages, in small font. It is extracted from a book I believe, A 10-min Guide for Using PPP to Connect Linux to the Internet by Terry Dawson.
Very elaborate but not user friendly and very much close to Unix commands.

Anyway thank you.

Dear Sixpax,
I managed to fix it! What I did was adjusting the modem speaker volume, moving it to the mid or left most position. Placing it in the right most position gave me the problems. I could now connect to my ISP.
However I could not make my Netscape Navigator 4.3 go to any website!
This is what appeared"Warning: the following hosts are unknown; home.netscape.com; home6.netscape.com;intermc.net ".

Bye.

Is that just a netscape problem? does it work in any other browser?

what happens if you type "nslookup home.netscape.com" ??

If, in any browser, you can't browse web sites by URL, then you probably have a DNS issue. Make sure that the correct DNS servers are listed in /etc/resolv.conf.

Try pinging www.linuxnewbie.org by its IP as opposed to its URL. Open a terminal window and type:
Code:
ping -c10 208.247.106.177
This should send 10 pings to the address, and you should get 10 responses. If so, it's definitely a DNS problem.
