ppp0 not found when running KPPP

When I run KPPP, i can make connection but with one error
ppp0 not found, i check the status and i am indeed connected
but can't send/rec any packets.

script fails when i use ppp-go.

if I do ifconfig i see ppp0 as connected with the correct IP
etc.

but ppp0 doesn't exists in /dev/ (or does it have to?)

i'm using slack9 / 2.4.21 - pcmcia modem...

i got it to work with a previous insall,
not sure what's going on now

any ideas are appreciated,
thanks
