powertop orders to disable NMI watchdog

Hello,

I ran powertop to see what is eating my cpu, I noticed the following message:

"Suggestion: disable the NMI watchdog by executing the following command:
echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog
The NMI watchdog is a kernel debug mechanism to detect deadlocks"

why do I have this watchdog on? What happens if I launch this command?

Document /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.6/Documentation/nmi_wtachdoc.txt is appended.
