PHP upgrade->E: Package 'php5' has no installation candidate

I am trying to upgrade my php to 5.5 from 5.4 but keep getting this error: "E: Package 'php5' has no installation candidate". I have been through many sites about upgrading and also this error but nothing has worked. I am running Linux Mint 14 Nadia. What I have tried is the standard apt-get update/upgrade, installing python-software-properties, and created a alternative_Repo.list. Any suggestions?

Thank for the help in advance.

K

Unfortunately Linux Mint 14 has been obsolete since May 2014.

That would explain why Apt can not install it.
Have a look at LAMP.

I have a lot of programs installed many that I use. I have wanted to upgrade but not loose my prorams. Is there a clean way to upgrade to the newest flavor without having to reinstall everything?

Check the link below to the Linux Mint site which has some options, not going to be simple. More in the second link. Not sure how this will work with something that outdated. If you had installed Mint 13, you would still have 18 months of support.
