password and or login not accepted after install of Fedora Core 6 install

I have installed and re-installed Fedora Core 6 from disc several times to try different ways to solve this, however, when I'm prompted for login and password the password is not accepted, and the login seems to accept just about anything. I'm completely new and can't seem to find a solution. What gives? Seems silly.I installed after a %25 wd clear of my laptop 3 times and tried applying login/password several different ways with the same result. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong from this info? Thanks. (I performed the test on the disc 2x's and all is well)

1. Check that capslock is turned off

2. Make sure that numpad is disabled (by pressing the numkey). Laptops sometimes have a funny way of enabling/disabling this key so experiment. If it is turned on, you will see the light on the laptop. You sometimes have to press the function key (fn) then another key like F9 to enable/disable this.

3. Try logging into a virtual terminal.

Press <ctrl> + <alt> + F1

Now type
Code:
root
as the username, press enter then input your password (note you will not see the password being entered, it will appear that nothing is happening but it is!)

Also, to get back to the Graphical Interface use

Press <ctrl> + <alt> + F6
