Login fails, but password is accepted

Hello,

I installed SUSE 9.1 a week ago. Suddenly something has happened. When I try to login as regular user, the computer accepts my password, then the screen suddenly blacks out, and the login prompt appears again.

If I try to login as root, it only opens the YaST config editor.

However, I tried logging in as failsafe, and there is no problem.

Can anyone help me with what may be the solution for this problem.

Thanks,

it sounds like an xwindows problem.
what happens if you login to a command line and then type 'startx'?

Thanks Allelopath,

I followed your suggestion:

At the command prompt, it asked me to delete a lock file in the /tmp directory. After I deleted that file did a "startx", KDE started.

However is there a solution other than typing "startx" everytime I login.

Thanks.

Oh, I observed one more thing. startx only works when I'm logged in as root. Otherwise it is the same problem.
