I am running FC4 and, shame on me, only as root. Now I finally made users, but I cannot use my users when login graphically (Gnome). Working in the terminal is no problem (su).
When i login to gnome, the login screens dissapears and for a little while nothing happens (just empty screen) and then it returns to the login screen.
Which log-files could give me useful information or can it be that I should ignite a service... ?
until now I have not found any logfile or source of info to help me out.
btw: i checked permissions, and /usr /usr/bin looks fine for the users
just made the user with useradd without options
Same try in graphic interface Gnome
I checked /var/log already but not yet did I find anything I could relate to this problem, that 's one of my problems in solving this...
Do you actually get to the point of asking for a password? or does it just flash and disappear?
Have you updated any packages recently? like pam or audit.
I had a problem where I'd enter the username press enter... the screen would flash back, then blue, and come back to the login screen asking for username again. I'd upgraded an audit package but not the pam package. They'd both had changed made and needed to work together. Once I updated both packages it worked fine.... I had to uninstall the audit package first.
It looks like that, though I not only give the username but also the username as I have to do in in the (graphical) login of fedora.
and I also updated very much recently....
Then the screen flashes back, then blue, and come back to the login screen asking for username and passwd again.
So pam and audit sounds like a good idea. But they are both 100% up2date. I also removed audit and reinstalled and still the problem.
Any other ideas or places to look for hints or causes?
I reinstalled Gnome but the problem stays.
But now, starting FC4 with runlevel 3 instead of 5 I get some clues:
in any other user than root the following happens if I start from runlevel 3 -command line 'startx':
xauth: timeout in locking authority file /opt/jre1.5.0_04/.Xauthority
.Xauthority has permissions for the users.... can anybody help me out what is happening?
Did you rebuild Java when you installed it? or install it straight from Sun. The Sun RPM apparantly causes problems. You need to use rpmbuild to rebuild the RPMs then install it.
