redhat 9 -icons and background dissapeared under root gnome login???
Hi all,
Finally got my postfix server up and running early this morning, went to bed, went to work, got home, logged into root. I then proceeded to startx gnome and it took a bit longer than usual, then when it finally came up all the icons were gone and the background was black?
The gnome toolbar at the bottom of the screen is there as usual but nothing else. Very strange I thought. When I tried to log out of gnome back to command it took ALOT longer than usual?
I had been adding a few users for postfix last thing this morning before going to bed. I cannot see how this would have affected the icons in my root gnome.
All other users gnome desktop come up with all icons and a normal background?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...

This happens to me every time I log in as root under a GUI...... I think it's because, theorectically, you shouldn't log in as root and then run a gui... much better to log in as a user, then give yourself root privileges as needed, harder to screw things up that way.

Thanks for your reply
However I think it is a problem...
Gnome has been fine for weeks when logged in as root???
The server has not even been turned off since last time I logged in and everything was fine (earlier today)?
I am perplexed.

I saved a picture for a backround in Redhat 9, in my root environment. One day it was just gone. I added it again and it stayed for a while. I think in the past 6 weeks it has disapeared at least twice. Very strange.

Ok for anyone interested.
Solved the problem as follows:
When trying to log into Redhat 9 gnome as root I noticed the comp sounded like it was working very hard (P2 400), I decided to check system monitor, and Im certainly no expert but there looked like way too many nautilus processes running. I clicked on one pressed 'end process' and hey presto problem solved. Background and icons immediately came back and the computer stopped sounding like it was about to fry itself.
