Not able to create partition using parted on RHEL6.5

I have RHEL6.5 running on oracle virtual box, I have added a virtual hard disk and want to create partitions in it but getting following errors.

[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/partitions
major minor #blocks name

8 16 1135474 sdb
8 0 8388608 sda
8 1 512000 sda1
8 2 7875584 sda2
253 0 6823936 dm-0
253 1 1048576 dm-1

[root@localhost ~]# parted /dev/sdb
GNU Parted 2.1
Using /dev/sdb
Welcome to GNU Parted! Type 'help' to view a list of commands.
(parted) mkpart
Error: /dev/sdb: unrecognised disk label
(parted)

what am I doing wrong here?

I am able to do this using fdisk, but i want to learn doing this using parted.

You need to create a disk label. Within parted, you use the mklabel command:

(parted) mklabel msdos

Then you can create the partitions.
