Um, isn't that the rpm command to upgrage a package? I'm not sure what this will do if you don't have an installed package already.

Almost. Slackware has a command
rpm2tgz that will convert an RPM into a Slackware tgz package. Once you've done that, you can install with the Slackware
installpkg command. That might work better.
Finally, the files you listed in your first post come from some of the development packages. When you installed Slackware, did you do a full install? In particular, I think glibc is missing. It should be on your Slackware CD.
