hello,
we have been happily using ubuntu 8.04 for a while on an inherited computer,(aging)which was fine, I bought a new lcd screen for it and configured the resolution and it worked fine for a couple of days. using nvidia driver. Then one day, no screen. I have tested the screen and cable, they work fine, and I hear the drum beats as ubuntu gets to sign in page, so i assume thats working, but all we see is the "no signal" box on the screen.
I guess that the video card could be cactus and will probably change it if no one has a better idea,(i dont have a spare so i'll avoid changing it until after this post)
so to get to the point... is there any common or otherwise, problem that can cause linux to not deliver a signal, and how would i solve it without a screen to read?. I know it's unlikely to be software, but would like some knowlageable input because I am not linux savvy but really like the concept and want to use it more.

If KDE/Gnome won't boot. And you keep a "no-signal" error, i would suggest pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (this is offcourse done AFTER u hear the drumrolls for Ubuntu), you'll get into a shell, which will work.
Now check the following log for errors: /etc/X11/xorg.0.log

for output to screen use: cat /etc/X11/xorg.0.log

Please post the errors it notes, lines with EE infront of it, but just (if possible) post the full log, so we can see what's happening.


Just a quick question, you do see your POST screen and GRUB right?

that was very fast! I thank you for your reply but as with all things I ever do, as soon as i post the problem, a solution comes immedeatly. loose video card perhaps? as after pulling it all apart and back again (3rd time!)and it works, I will never know what that was about. but I humbly thank you for the help
