Finally - Brute force was the answer!

I am now working from my LINUX Mint computer again thanks to suggestions from EVO2 that gave me ideas for things to try. I decided to try EVO2's suggestion to remove ESET. I loaded a live Mint 13 disk and opened the root directory as admnistrator and then looked for any file or directory with ""ESET"" or ""NOD32"" I found them scattered all over the computer. I erased everything and rebooted after removing the live disk. WALLA!!! My display was back!!! Not without some problems but nothing I can't handle now that I can actually see what I am doing. One thing I will do is reload the Nvidia driver and change my display; then reboot and set the display back again. Hopefully that will reset my display configuration files (of which I know absolutely nothing) and remove any remaining feces left by the anti-vrus from hell; ESET's Internet Security. I plan to make a hobby of the next few months finding where ESET has a presence on the internet and warn people not to buy their products. A very big thanks again to EVO2!

Hi,

really glad you were able to sort this out. Sounds like you are learning quite a bit about your system too: so it's not all bad.

If you want to use any sort of security or antivirus stuff in future, look at what is available in the Mint repos and ask here on LQ about what other people are using.

As a general rule, don't install 3rd party software (especially if it is closed source) unless you have very good reason to.

Cheers,

Evo2.
