No command prompt or X windows after Installing ESET NOD32 4.077
 

I made the mistake of installing NOD32 4.077 to my MINT 12 64 bit computer. I had zero problems until I did that and that Mint computer has become my main computer!

Now when I boot, the boot routine takes the same amount of time and the hardrive light blinks in the same pattern as usual but the only thing I am left with is a black screen with an X ( black X with a white outline) that moves like a cursor. No command line to fix the problem and no way to get a command line (even if I know how to fix it!!). I do have a live disk and I can boot from that and have access to the config files on the harddrive, but I haven't the slightest idea what to fix.

I don't want to reinstall because I have spent a lot of time adding software and configuring it. I really don't want to have to start all over.

Oh and I do not have rescue disk because i have never needed one before. I have learned my lesson though. Not that I would know what to do with it if I had one.

you should be able to get a commandline/console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1.

Assuming that installing "NOD32 4.077" is what caused you problems, we need to know what it actually is (I have no idea, and google seems to indicate it may be some sort of anti virus software) and what method you used to install it.

Thank you for the response. NOD32 is a commercial Internet security program from ESET. I have it on our Windows machines and it works well.

It comes as an executable that appears to be distribution independent. I had the old version installed and it worked.; I uninstalled it using ESET's executable uninstaller. I then ran their new installer for the newer version. It said I needed to reboot and when I did I ended up with the big x and no ability to interact with the machine. I will need to reboot to try your suggestions and will post again afterwards.

Now I have a command prompt!! Thank you! I tried to run firefox by typing the command but it said I needed to specify a display. Of course I don't know how to do that so I will have to research that.

I tried xstart not realizing that I had it backwards. But I have to go to bed now because I have to be at work early tomorrow. So I won't be able to post again until tomorrow night.

What I will do tomorrow is setup another machine to run on the internet. That way I don't have to reboot every time I want to try something.

Any advise on some things to try to get Xwindows to start normally?

I just had to try it one more time. When I tried to run startx it said I had a fatal server error. Already active for display 0. and also ddxSIGgroup invalid MIT-MAGICCookie.1 Keyxinit:giving up Xinit: unable to connect to xserver. I have no idea what any of that means.

Hi,

X is already running: that is what is displaying the cursor ("black X with white outline").
Trying to run startx won't get you anywhere.

Please post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, and your ~/.xsession-errors if your setup logs you in automatically.

Somehow you changed dm to start X instead your default DE
Check you /etc/X11/xinit/default-display-manager

I just read your suggestions but I am at work right now. I won't get home until after 6:30 PM mountain time so I can't try this yet. But I wanted to acknowledge receipt and express my gratitude to you for your help.

By the way, I had also contacted ESET support and they basically told me to "f&*k off." Needless to say no ESET product wil ever be in my home or workplace again and I will warn others to avoid ESET! I wrote a review for ESET Internet Security 5.3 on Amazon and posted their e-mail response to my support request for all to see.

Here is my xorg.0.log. I cannot get the content of .xsession-errors because ESET has it locked and I cannot change the permissions even as administrator. I notice there are a number of other hidden files locked by Eset. A picture is starting to form. I know that LINUX is vulnerable to attack through the desktop. I think that ESET grabs the desktop and runs the desktop communications through its virus engine and that is what is not working. But that is just a wild guess and probably completely wrong.

your Xorg.0.log looks ok. Tt sounds like this eset/NOD32 is some kind of malware itself. Horrible stuff. Can you uninstall it?

I found a xorg.o.log file from Dec 2011 that has none of the powerbutton stuff. Is there some way to revert?

I don't know how to uninstall it from the command line. But that gives me an idea. The last uninstall file was an executable. Maybe there is another one I could just run. Nope, I just looked, no uninstall file.

even if you don't know how to uninstall it you should be able to stop it from running.
How to do this will depend on what init system is being used. For example on a sysvinit setup like Debian uses there should be a startup script in /etc/init.d/ with a symlink to /etc/rcN.d/ where N corresponds to the run level. You can findout what run level you are on with the "runlevel" command.

Thank you! I will work on that. I actually have quite a lot of computer knowledge and experience. I just don't know very much about LINUX internal workings. For instance I forgot how to change file permissions on the command line (I had to look it up)!! I will work on your suggestions and do some research for the next few days. Unfortunately I have some long days at work ahead and won't be able to get to it. I will post again as soon as I have some results to share.
